Spring Beauty (Claytonia virginica)

Plant Family Portulacaceae – Purslane family

Spring Beauty (Claytonia virginica) is an early bloomer in the Midwest.  It is one of the first of the woodland wildflowers to send up leaves and flowers.  It is a welcome sight even it is way down on the forest floor among the leaves and other detritus from the previous growing seasons.  Although it tends to grow on upland sights I have found it densely growing in swamps.
